As the 21st century realm of technology continues to improve, some individuals and communities are being left behind. This concept, known is “the digital divide”, describes the inequality in access to to information and computer technology devices, more specifically described as the accessibility to broadband. Broadband essentially connects people to the internet. This inequality is found between those in cities versus rural homes, higher versus lower socioeconomic statuses, the educated versus uneducated, and so many more. One of the largest sectors the digital divide has an impact on is education. Not having access to modern technologies during one’s education places them at a major disadvantage when trying to enter the workforce as well as with trying to gain other opportunities in society. The internet offers a plethora of information on how to better problem solve issues and provides tools for how to better our future. Some ways in which this gap can be bridged is through assisting lesser developed countries on expanding infrastructure, having schools assign laptops to each and every student, and constantly promoting the concept of digital literacy.
