Stop Hate for Profit is a campaign created in the middle of June to pause business advertisements on Facebook and to hold Facebook accountable for the racism that spreads across its platform. Many organizations including NAACP and ADL have joined the effort to essentially stop the hate from spreading across Facebook’s vast network. Facebook as neglected to take any actions or personal responsibility for the hate and discrimination that it helps spread, while not changing any of their advertisement policies. The company continues to earn around $70 billion in revenue from various other businesses and corporations annually.
One of the issues sparking this campaign is that many businesses continue to advertise on Facebook, despite having publicly stated their support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Facebook has also allowed information about violence against protestors, who are demanding the end to social injustices to Black individuals in America, to continue to spread. Some of the initiatives the campaign is calling for are monitoring the safety specifically in private groups, halting Facebook’s ad revenue which comes from false information or harmful content, and providing more support and resources.
