Florida Sets New Covid-19 State Record: Becoming the New Epicenter

As well as cases of Covid-19 increasing rapidly around the country, Florida specifically has emerged as a new epicenter for the virus. After New York’s previous standing as the state with the highest number of daily cases, the state was able to take control of the virus and greatly decrease daily new cases and hospitalizations. Florida has now taken the spot from New York with a record 15,299 new cases in 24 hours. The state of Florida began its reopening process on May 4th as restaurants, gyms, and beaches started to reopen around the state. Despite steady increases in cases, one large attraction in Florida has partially reopened this past week. This attraction is the famous Disney World theme parks in Orlando, Florida. This past Saturday two out of the four parks opened at minimized capacities. Some of the prevention methods the parks are requiring are masks, social distancing, temperature checks before entering the park, and required advanced reservations. Although they are taking all of these precautions, many are claiming that this opening is premature, especially considering Florida’s ability, or lack thereof, to control the virus’ spread.
