The Supreme Court blocked President Trump’s attempt to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program which has protected thousands of immigrants from deportation. DACA was created in 2012 by President Obama to help young people who were illegally living in the United States obtain work permits. These people are known as Dreamers. The Trump administration tried to get rid of this program but was ultimately halted by the 5-4 Supreme Court decision won by the swing vote of Chief Justice John Roberts. President Trump responded to the Supreme Court’s decision by writing that “the Supreme Court doesn’t like him” on Twitter. He also plans to look for new Supreme Court justices, specifically Conservative, with a list of contenders published by September.
The Supreme Court decision was praised by many Democrats including presidential nominee Joe Biden. One important note made by immigration lawyers in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, is that over 25,000 health care workers come from DACA recipients and that the cancellation of DACA during “this national health emergency would be catastrophic.”
