NCFCS Applauds the Supreme Court Decision to Strike Down Louisiana Abortion Restrictions

Chief Justice John Roberts recently took the side of the liberal justices again, after voting in their favor on DACA, in a 5-4 vote against a Louisiana abortion law restriction. The law would have closed almost all clinics in the state by banning doctors from performing the abortion procedure who did not have privileges at a hospital close by. Other Conservative justices, namely Justice Clarence Thomas, who voted in favor of the law, also went so far as to say that that the Roe v. Wade decision should be “revisited.”

The Louisiana law showed many similarities to an attempt at abortion restrictions in Texas in 2016. Although both the Texas and Louisiana laws were blocked, members of the Center for Reproductive Rights are concerned that the decisions could spark other states to try and pass restrictions on access to abortions. Presidential hopeful Joe Biden also released a statement saying that “women’s health care rights have been under attack.”
