It has always been an important sign of respect to use the correct pronouns for people. However, data shows it is that much more important for transgender and non-binary individuals. Research has shown that when people use the correct pronouns for transgender individuals, there is 50% less of a chance that they will try to take their life.
One way to normalize the discussion around gender and pronouns is by having allies in the cisgender community. Publicly displaying one’s pronouns, especially for cisgender people, is becoming increasingly common in email signatures and social media platforms. This simple act shows that one cares about inclusivity and the importance of correct gendering.
This conversation of gender identity and using one’s correct pronouns could be an uncomfortable or newer topic for some, however the Trevor Project says that when having these discussions it’s important to just listen and learn from others. If you’re unsure of someone’s pronouns, the best way to move forward is just by asking. Just like if you’re unsure of someone’s name, you would ask them. The same goes for pronouns.
