Public Housing Demand During a Global Pandemic

Large cities across the country have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the low income and public housing sectors. Washington D.C.’s Department of Housing and Community Development is looking to create a loan program to help offset the economic strain caused by the pandemic. The proposed almost $40 million loan would assist the upkeep of existing affordable housing units. The ongoing issue of homelessness and need for affordable housing developments is now coupled with a public health crisis. Not only does this housing need to be available, but it needs to be safe and healthy for the residents inside. 

A large portion of D.C. residents work in service industries, such as hospitality, which has been greatly reduced because of the pandemic. Many facing economic hardships look towards affordable public housing developments for help. COVID-19 has also increased mental health struggles for many. Public housing residents are encourage to build communities with each other, especially during these trying times. “Frequent and honest communication” is important for building these communities.
