The National Urban League has published their annual State of Black America report. This year’s report addresses both pandemics seen today: COVID-19 and racism. The intense “explosion” of activism and protests have largely stemmed from the murder of George Floyd. The report will be unpacked in a virtual series called State of Black America – Unmasked. The virtual series is today, August 13th, from 2PM – 5PM EDT. Speakers in this virtual event include National Urban League President Marc H. Morial as well as featured speakers ranging from officials and activists to health and education leaders.
One item featured in the report is The National Equality Index. This index provides a concrete, analytical report about the progress towards economic empowerment for Black and Hispanic Americans relative to white individuals. The index is broken down into categories of economics, health, education, social justice, and civic engagement. This year’s overall equality index of Black America is 73.8%. This means that these individuals are missing 26.2% of the full equality white people experience. The lowest rated sub categories of the index are economics and social justice, both being in the 50%-60% range.
