As Covid-19 cases in Florida continue to rise, there is increasing concern for the large retirement populations in the state. One of the most notable communities is the Villages in Central Florida home to around 120,000 people aged 55 and older. Towards the beginning of the pandemic in the United States, during the months of March to June, there were very few cases in the Villages. However, the number of cases has dramatically increased since the beginning of July. One of the largest counties in the Villages, Sumter County, has seen an increase of 202 cases since the beginning of June.
One of the problems in this sprawling community is the many amenities the residents are still utilizing such as the golf courses, swimming classes, public park spaces, and hair salons. Despite the rising cases, many doctors in the Villages state that the hospitals are prepared to be able treat and increasing number of patients. The largest concern right now is the nursing homes in and around the community which might not be able to avoid or control an increase in cases.
